Artwork Documentation Tool
A practical tool that helps artists document and preserve software-based installations
LI-MA’s Artwork Documentation Tool empowers artists to independently document their software-based installations. Developed in the context of the FUTURE PROOF MEDIA ART project, the platform guides users through key preservation steps, ensuring long-term accessibility and display of digital artworks. Artists can save progress, revisit tasks, and securely store essential documentation materials online.
During the first phase of the FUTURE PROOF MEDIA ART research, LI-MA developed a draft version of a tool designed to support artists in documenting their complex, software-based installation artworks. This prototype was based on a simplified version of the Artwork Documentation Package.
Building on this foundation, phase two focused on transforming the draft into a functional online platform—now ready to launch. The tool is structured around a series of clear steps and tasks, aimed at empowering artists to take control of documenting their own works, ensuring they can be presented both now and in the future. The documentation steps include:
-
Save Your Sketches & Working Notes
-
Make Backups & Store Appropriately
-
Document Software
-
Document Hardware & Playback Equipment
-
Create Wiring Diagram & Installation Manual
-
Document Key Information About the Artwork
-
Make a Video Registration of Your Artwork
-
Gather & Store All Additional Available Material
Through the Artwork Documentation Tool platform, artists can create a personal account, save their progress, and return to their documentation process over time. The tool serves both as a practical guide and a secure space to store the resulting documentation.
