‘Two Songs’ at the 15th Gwangju Biennale
Artist duo Persijn Broersen & Margit Lukács invite audiences to an exploration of wilderness and digital landscapes.
With the date fast approaching, we are excited to remind you of the opening of the Netherlands Pavilion at the 15th Gwangju Biennale. Invited by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Korea, LI-MA curators Sanneke Huisman and Theus Zwakhals present Two Songs, an exhibition featuring the acclaimed artist duo Broersen & Lukács. The exhibition will run from 7 September to 1 December 2024 at the Gwangju Museum of Art.
Two Songs marks an exciting continuation of LI-MA's collaboration with the Netherlands Embassy in Korea, building on previous projects like the 2018 NEMAF Festival in Seoul. Broersen & Lukács were carefully selected for their ability to address contemporary themes—such as wilderness, nature, and migration—through a uniquely Dutch perspective, while also resonating with an international, particularly Asian, audience.
In line with the biennale’s theme, PANSORI: A Soundscape of the 21st Century, Two Songs explores the intersection of landscapes and soundscapes. The exhibition features two video works by Broersen & Lukács, I Wan'na Be Like You (2024) and Forest on Location (2019), which reimagine wilderness in Western popular culture. Using technologies such as photogrammetry and 3D modelling, the artist duo deconstruct the mythologised image of nature, revealing it as a digital and media-infused construct. The films challenge traditional Western views of wilderness, positioning nature as both stage and protagonist and offering an alternative perspective that balances between the real and the virtual, memory and imagination.
About the Artists
Amsterdam-based Broersen & Lukács are known for their critical engagement with Western visual culture, working across video, animation, and graphics. Their works, which have been part of LI-MA's collection since 2012, have been exhibited globally at venues including FOAM in Amsterdam, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Curated by Nicolas Bourriaud, the 15th Gwangju Biennale brings together 73 artists from 30 countries under the theme PANSORI: A Soundscape of the 21st Century. The biennale explores space and its political organisation through the lens of art and sound, creating a unique operatic experience for visitors.
